Maggie + Steve - Stunning Backyard Wedding in Medina, MN

*Disclaimer - this was a wedding I filmed and edited for Olsen Media, for which I am a contractor

During the ceremony, Rex, the officiant, mentioned multiple times how intentional these two are, and I couldn’t agree more. They are so authentic, kind, and thoughtful. I noticed right away when I met them at their apartment. How they talked about incorporating different small businesses and friends and the importance of the guest experience was incredible. Here are a few examples of things that I thought were cool and unique: 1. The florist, Kindred Bloom, foraged a lot of the table decorations, ceremony flowers, grasses, mushrooms, apples, etc. 2. Their bartender and friend, Marco Zappia, designed three waves of cocktails and mocktails for the guests to enjoy throughout the evening!

Furthermore, they told me that they didn’t want their video to be “fake” in the way that social media often presents people and products. Steve said something like, “If one of the little kiddos is having a tantrum, film that and put it in the video!” Well, to my knowledge, there weren’t any tantrums, but there were lots of smiles from the little ones and the many friends and family members present on this wonderful day. Again, these two were and are amazing, and I’m so thankful I got to be a small part of their big day! Congrats, you two :)  -Ty

Backyard or Intimate Weddings

Backyard/intimate weddings are by far my favorite type of wedding and here’s why… They are oftentimes small (although this one was an exception) and I find that they give the couple more opportunity to put their time and money into things that are important to them and, from my perspective, it results in them having a much more enjoyable wedding day.

With these types of weddings, you’re often left with a smaller guest list. Smaller guest lists mean more time for you to engage with the people you actually want to talk to. It also means that you won’t have to talk to your third cousin, Charlie, whom your parents insisted you invite because “he’s family,” even though you’ve only met him once in your life.

These weddings create space for you to work with any catering you want, or at least a wider selection than you’d otherwise get working with a wedding venue. So instead of picking from a list of five catering companies, all of which charge $50/plate, you can choose between 105 and spend $5-$15/plate.

These weddings create opportunities for you to focus on your guests’ experience. For example, this couple had their catering/bar team create three waves of drinks, with both alcoholic and NA options. So when their guests arrived for the ceremony, they were met with cool and refreshing lemonade! It probably was something better than lemonade, but I didn’t get to try any of the delicious-looking beverages.

In short, small, intimate weddings give you space to make your wedding what YOU want it to be, not what someone else wants it to be.
